An Artist’s Experience

In the past I have always felt inauthentic when writing and now I think I’ve figured out why.

An Artist's Experience

Writing about anything other than direct experience is a lie. If the writer is not writing from experience or from experiential insight, then they are writing based on second hand knowledge or mass cultural indoctrination. In other words, they are writing from a place of in-authenticity. There is no truth grounding the work and this breeds staleness in every sentence written.

This doesn’t mean that that all writing (or any creative work for that matter) has to be based directly on a specific experience, but it has to be grounded in the writer’s direct experience.

This is the missing ingredient. It’s the distinguishing factor that separates great art from the mediocre.
