This blog post is about sunglasses and why they are so useful for travelling in Asia, especially when travelling alone.
And no, it’s not because the the sun is bright.
Sunglasses are handy to have because they (hopefully) hide your eyes.
From personal experience, I can tell you that there were many times when was forced into an intense haggling situation with a Tuk Tuk driver or someone else trying to sell me something.
The fact I was normally wearing sunglasses was a great because I didn’t know what the hell I was doing (especially in the first few weeks) and my uncertainty was harder to detect through my glasses.
Not only this, but my glasses were also reflective, meaning the local person I was haggling with could only see themselves when they looked at me. Causing them to question themselves and their very existence. For a brief moment, they were thrown off and that’s when I would strike.
This little advantage was all I needed to control the price and pay 50 pence for a Tuk Tuk ride rather than 70 pence.
No need to thank me.
